Choosing Toilets and Bidets

June 28, 2011 in Toilets

When you are deciding what type of toilet to buy, you need to consider what height the pan should be at, the height of the cistern and whether or not you want the cistern to be visible or hidden within a wall. If you wish to have a hidden cistern, then you have the option of buying a back-to-wall toilet which is one that sits flush against the wall, or a toilet that hangs on the wall.
These types of toilets are typically attached to a ‘false’ wall or cabinet wherein the concealed cistern either sits inside a cabinet or is positioned on a frame which is attached to the backside of the wall. The wall must be sturdy if you plan on installing one of these toilets as cisterns can be rather heavy.

There are many styles, types and sizes of toilets on the market today. If your bathroom is rather traditional in nature you can choose a traditionally styled toilet. A more modern bathroom would look great with a sleek, low-profile toilet. If you want to maximise the space you have available, a corner toilet with a small sink is a good option for making a bathroom look larger.

As far as toilet seats go, there are traditional wooden toilet seats to choose from as well as plastic, soft and novelty toilet seats to consider. Which type you choose will be dependent upon the style of bathroom you have and your own personal preferences. Remember that even though a novelty toilet seat is a fun idea, it will not look so great in a traditional bathroom.

Bidets are not used much any more for the task they were intended for. However, they are very convenient fixtures to have when you want to wash your feet, soak out underwear or clean up after potting training toddlers. There are wall-mounted and free-standing bidets to choose from. A wall-mounted bidet will provide the illusion of more space as there is a good deal of space between the bottom of the bidet and the floor. However, if your toilet stands on the floor, this look will not work as it will not be uniform. A tap filled bidet is the obvious choice over an under-the-rim filled bidet if you plan to use the bidet for the above mentioned tasks.

Consider paying a visit to a local bathroom shop so that you can see all of the different types of toilets and bidets that are available today. It would be a good idea to take along some measurements so that you are sure to choose the right sized toilet and bidet. You also can view toilets and bidets online at any one of a number of online bathroom shops.
